Lifting the Banner High
(At St MacNissi's, 1991)

Jack McCann, a gentle man,
Whose deep voice resonates a great heart,
Full of reverential devotion to the
Cause of nature, here,
In Antrim’s glens which speak the wisdom
Of ages’ rock and the ever green –

Jack McCann, septuagenarian apostle
Of the sainted John,
Charged by a whisper at the end,
Founds, here, in these glens
The church of humanity, the faith of reason,

And lifts the banner high
That we, through the prism of this life,
Might grasp the peace of justice
In the place of our birth.
