What's In A Name?
The historian, Timothy Carder, estimated that at least 48 settlements in 11 different countries bear the name of 'Brighton'. Quite surprizing, given that this Brighton, the one this site is about, the original Brighton, didn't officially get this name until 1810. It's true that Carder dates the first known use of the name 'Brighton' to 1660. But even after 1810 the old name of Brighthelmston continued to be used well into the century.
So this section of the site plans to look at the Other Brightons. It should turn up some interesting contrasts, I suspect.
