Fairlight Infant School Sports day, July 1986
Beanbag Race

These three photographs are from the mid 1980s; the days before the National Curriculum, school league tables, and before teachers were turned into paper pushers and drill sergeants. A recent report, commissioned by the government itself, has shown that the Department for Education and Skills has the greatest number of 'performance items' of any government department (Mapping the Local Government Performance and Reporting Landscape). It's no surprise.

I've often thought that Charles Dickens' novel, Hard Times, should be compulsory reading for all education ministers and their senior civil civil servants, consultants, etc. Perhaps they might just begin to recognise themselves for the Gradgrinds that they are.

The woman in the top and bottom photographs is Anne Hemmings, the last headteacher of Fairlight Infants School before it was merged with the Junior School to form the present all-through primary school.
